Volunteering
Since its inception in 2003, Bay of Islands Sailing Week has always been a community volunteer-run event, and we’re proud to call it a regatta by sailors, for sailors.
The regatta has a dedicated committee that plan and prepares year-round to make the event a success each year, as well as a volunteer army of over 60 people who freely give their time and energy during the regatta itself.
Putting on a regatta is a big undertaking, much bigger than many people realise, and we’re always on the lookout for people who can help in any way – whether that’s with setting up and packing down the Regatta HQ area, on-water officials, start boats, mark layers, umpires and safety teams, to results processors, bartenders, recycling helpers and countless other jobs that have to happen each year to ensure we put on an event that people love.
As people naturally come and go, we also need new volunteers to stand for the committee, as many of those involved have already given significant amounts of their time over the years and are ready to pass the torch.
In the past, committee members have tended to come from the four local Bay of Islands yacht clubs. But now that most of our committee meetings happen via Zoom, we are keen to see more representation from the wider NZ sailing community that makes up such a large part of our participant base.
If you’d like to play a part in making this hugely popular event happen, wherever you’re based, we’d love to hear from you.
And if you can spare any time during regatta week – from a few hours to a few days – please get in touch and let us know how you’re keen to help out (regatta set up, on-water volunteers, bar helpers, etc).
